Achieving a global ocean free of the harmful impacts of pollution by 2050: Do you agree with our recommendations?
Pollution threatens ocean ecosystems, human health and economies. Yet, scientists and decision-makers lack a comprehensive understanding of marine pollution's extent and impact. The UN Decade of Ocean Science lists pollution as one of the ten challenges critical to ocean health, but almost halfway through the decade, progress is limited.

In March, Back to Blue - an initiative of Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation - will publish an ambitious, strategic framework for a global group of stakeholder organisations to collaboratively build a holistic evidence base about the impact and extent of ocean pollution and, in turn, spark action. Back to Blue has engaged with stakeholders from across the UN system, science, industry, policy and finance over a two-year period, and this roadmap is a synthesis of their views.

This ambitious and bold project has the potential to reshape the global ocean community's approach to ocean pollution. Share your views on the proposed recommendations:

Recommendation 1: Establish, by 2026, a high-level global multi-stakeholder Taskforce charged with achieving the vision of a global ocean free of the harmful impacts of pollution by 2050.

Recommendation 2: The Taskforce, supported by a Secretariat, should publish a Global Ocean Pollution Assessment and Action Plan by 2030, updated every five years.
