Please read below about the two different programs.

Learning Garden Program

Fit4Kids Learning Gardens and cooking classes feed students’ appetite for hands-on delicious fun!

Learning Gardens engage children in planting, growing, harvesting, and best of all, tasting fresh, flavorful food—changing the way children feel about vegetables. Fit4Kids believes that getting kids into the garden and kitchen at a young age will inspire them to develop healthy eating habits for life.

School-based gardens get thousands of children’s hands dirty each year through a comprehensive curriculum based on Virginia’s Standards of Learning. Students also grow and learn in the garden after school as a part of our Garden Clubs.

All of the Fit4Kids Learning Gardens enable young people to understand where real food comes from and awakens their taste buds to the pleasure of fresh, healthy food.

Tackling children's health and wellness at its roots, Learning Gardens teach kids to “dig” vegetables!

Game On, Girl Program

Game On, Girl! is a comprehensive initiative to empower adolescent girls to be physically active, nutritionally fit, and ready to take on the world!

Adolescent girls engage in physical activity significantly less than their male counterparts.  Girls’ activity levels may drop by as much as 83% as they transition through adolescence. By age 18, the majority of girls do not engage in any physical activity outside of required PE classes–missing out on vital physical, mental, emotional, and social benefits of regular physical activity. (Kimm et al., 2002; Wolf et al., 1993)

To tackle this gender disparity, Greater Richmond Fit4Kids created Game On, Girl!–a comprehensive initiative to empower adolescent girls to be physically active, nutritionally fit, and ready to take on the world!

Game On, Girl! Middle School:  A 10-week, after-school program for middle school girls to learn to enjoy a wide variety of sports and physical activities, fuel their bodies for success, and be effective leaders in their communities.

Interns with Game On, Girl!

Our interns' main responsibility is to act as a coach, plan for and facilitate high-energy and engaging afterschool classes. When we are in person, the girls typically play a variety of sports to help build their confidence in being active and to find out what sports they like to play in a low-pressure setting. When we are virtual we are able to provide programming but it is via video conference and focuses more on active games and movement activities that require no equipment (dancing, shadow boxing, etc.) Right now we are working under a hybrid model with some classes in-person and others operating virtually. Because of this, I just want to reiterate that this position will require you to be flexible and adaptable!

  • Research best practices working with middle school students and develop lesson plans

  • Lead high energy, physically active programming for middle school students

  • Foster an inclusive environment where students feel safe, confident, and connected

  • Other organizational duties as assigned- social media, design work, data tracking, etc.
