The 2022 National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) exposes young people to the ramifications of serious traffic accidents and offers career guidance in the fields of transportation and public safety.
UNLV will host a free, daylong transportation and driver education event for teenage drivers on Tuesday, July 26, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. beginning in UNLV parking lot N, behind Thomas and Mack Center. This event is open to all teens in the community.
The event begins with a crash reenactment, including a police and EMS response, at 8 a.m. (No sirens will be used to make sure people in buildings closest to the event will not be disturbed.) Afterward, the teens will move indoors (CBC-A 112) for the rest of the day.
Teens will hear from a trauma surgeon as he “treats victims” of the simulated crash, and then the police will discuss the DUI process. Next, the students will observe a staged trial for the driver, complete with participation of The Honorable Judge, Suzan Baccum, who has presided over DUI court cases for a decade. Retired Assistant District Attorney for Vehicular Homicide Bruce Nelson will also participate.
The afternoon will include presentations by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department detectives who investigate fatal crashes; they will discuss why math and science are critical to their jobs. The afternoon will end with a panel of family members whose lives were forever changed by a car crash.
