Closing Reception for Finding Voices art exhibition
Note: To accommodate for the ongoing labour disruptions, the closing reception is scheduled for after picket hours.

Curated by Sheetal Prasad

Finding Voices examines the relationships between archives, technology use, and history classrooms. Taking into consideration current events in Canada, such as the public announcement of evidence of unmarked graves at Indian Residential Schools across the country, activism by Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate, and demands to rename public institutions bearing the names of colonial agents, the omission of racialized and marginalized histories in Canadian education can no longer be tolerated as status quo. Finding Voices combines history with creation, allowing viewers to experience silenced histories in multimodal ways. The exhibition subverts mainstream Canadian history. This exhibition is in collaboration with pre-service teachers in YorkU's B.Ed program; intertwining historical inquiry and art-making practices to create artworks that rework archival documents and histories to shift the paradigm away from Canada’s construction of the ‘ideal’ history into a history that is complex and non-linear.
