Project Ricochet, Inc. - PR Health: Advisory Board

Purpose and Background

Project Ricochet’s mission is to establish and maintain an ongoing and effective coalition of parents, grandparents, youth service providers, civic, community, and faith- based leaders to incorporate a “bottom-up” approach to issues related to the reduction of minority youth into the criminal justice system. The organization seeks to offer concrete ways in which affected youth can be redirected to access economic opportunity through youth-driven entrepreneurial projects and job placement through innovative apprenticeships and placement in area businesses.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health is partnering with Project Ricochet, Inc., a Kentucky 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Fayette County, Kentucky, to host forums and workshops, develop a media campaign, create a resource directory, an evaluation plan, and to provide health information to English and Spanish community members.

We have been tasked with creating a community health equity seven (7) member advisory board that will meet bi-monthly to underscore the importance of developing, implementing, and executing a Covid/Immunization health-equity strategy for Fayette, Bourbon, and Scott Counties.

The role of the PR Health Advisory Board Member is to develop effective health equity outreach strategies. This Board has an important voice in the community when implementing and executing community-level health equity strategy.

Internal Structure

The Board is encouraged to work with community groups and local businesses to identify potential candidates for the board.

The PR Health Advisory Board must consider if its composition is reflective of the community it represents. If not, the Advisory Board is encouraged to develop a recruitment strategy for new and diverse board members.

External Structure

Identification of issues of health equity, diversity and inclusion and cultural competency is critical to the work. The objective is understanding what health equity is, and what it is not. We seek to utilize the expertise of Advisory Board members when developing health equity education (board and community), unless the group’s expertise is out of scope to that of existing Advisory Board members, then we will identify external partners to provide education.

The Advisory Board will provide guidance on public health by developing an action plan, including goals and objectives to understand data that describes the community. The Advisory Board will offer insights on a bi-annual community health needs assessment, which is an effective tool to identify the needs of the community and health differences among different populations.  In addition to linking health equity indices, Advisory Board members will query on race, ethnicity, age, disability, and gender identity data. Understanding the data by zip code including the social determinants of health and identifying disparities strengthens the work to improve health outcomes. To track progress, developing a health equity dashboard with actionable goals and outcomes is also important for the board.
