Welcome to Biology 295: Educational and Social Research in Biology!
In order to apply for this course, you need to already have identified a research faculty (Principal Investigator or PI). If the PI is not a biology faculty member, you will also need to identify a biology faculty member to serve as your biology research faculty sponsor.
For your first semester of BIOL 295, you are required to write a 10-page paper (including graphs, tables, photos) that could be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. If you are in your second semester of BIOL 295, you will need to prepare a research poster, present the poster at the BIOL 395 Poster Symposium, and submit an abstract summarizing your research.
Prerequisites: Biology 101 credit (UNC credits or BE) or placement (PL) through the Biology 101 placement exam. While not required, we encourage students to complete one semester of BIOL 291: Teaching Apprentice in Biology before enrolling in this course (especially if they are pursuing an education-related research project in biology).
Credit Hours: Variable (1-3). Full 3 hours credit requires 10 hours per week devoted to research.
This course fulfills the Research and Discovery requirement of the UNC General Education curriculum. This course does not count towards the Biology major.
