Diversity: What should go into writing a diversity statement in addition to race and gender?
Facilitator: Anna Setyaeva, Pedagogical Fellow

Date, Time, and Location: Thursday, April 16th from noon-1:30pm via Zoom

Most tenure-track job applications today require that applicants submit a Diversity Statement along with other documents. Writing and editing a Diversity Statement is challenging for multiple reasons; disclosing personal information and reflecting on how one’s identity contributed to academic and personal struggles can be very difficult. Although writing a Diversity Statement can be stressful, this document gives each applicant a unique opportunity to introduce themselves as individuals and convey their commitment to diversity and inclusion.

In this workshop, we will discuss how to craft and/or edit a diversity statement that accomplishes two goals: discusses applicant’s intersectional identity and a novel set of experiences as well as emphasizes applicants commitment to diversity, that can take form of concrete steps taken to help students of diverse backgrounds, completion of additional training, and practices used to foster diversity in the classroom and on campus at large.

In the first part of the workshop, participants will use WordCloud feature available through Mentimeter.Com to create a comprehensive list of personal information that can be shared in a diversity statement, that is not limited to race and gender. In the second part, participants will learn more about the “Do not Tell, Show” strategy: participants will be asked to reflect on active steps that they have taken to contribute to campus diversity and give specific examples of their involvements. In the concluding part of the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to evaluate 3 sample Diversity Statements and will be given time to create an outline for their own statement. The workshop will be conducted via Zoom.

Date, Time, and Location: Thursdays, April 30th, May 7th, May 14th, and May 21st from noon-2:00pm via Zoom

Participants will leave this program with a certificate in course design, a draft syllabus for a course they may teach in the future, and strategies for teaching that course. To get the certificate, full attendance and participation is required for all four sessions.
