SJASD Children's Choir 2024/2025 Audition Application

The SJASD Children’s Choir is pleased to open auditions for the 2024/2025 school year. The Children’s Choir is open to students who will be in grades 4 and 5 in fall of 2024 (and are currently in grades 3 and 4).  Auditions will take place on May 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 at École Voyageur (37 Voyageur Ave) and families can book an audition time slot at https://www.sjsdchoirs.ca/childrens

The Children’s Choir is a high-level choral ensemble that provides a unique, enriching experience for its members. Young singers will not only learn healthy vocal technique and challenging repertoire but will also build personal confidence and make lasting friendships. Singers can expect to see vocal improvement, no matter their current skill level.  

Participation in the SJASD Children’s Choir will be an experience of a lifetime, which also means that students will be working very hard. Since we only meet once a week, regular attendance at all practices and performances is required. As a high caliber group we have high expectations for our members. Please carefully consider if participating in this elite choir is a commitment that your family will be able to make.  

What you need to know about Children's Choir

  • The season runs from September 2024 to May 2025 
  • Weekly rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 4:15 until 5:45PM at École Voyageur (37 Voyageur Ave) beginning on September 6th, 2023.  
  • A two-day choir camp is being planned for early October at Camp Assiniboia, approximately 30 minutes west of Winnipeg.  This camp experience allows the choir to learn many of the songs for the year, establish group bonding and build excellent choral techniques and habits. There will be an overnight option for Gr 5 students, and Gr 4s will be bussed out each day.
  • The Children's Choir performs at a number of divisional events and local music festivals. These happen during the evening as well as occasionally during the school day. 
  • Singers must also participate in their own local school choir. 
  • Divisional choir singers value their experience, show great behaviour and work ethic.  
  • Families are a part of our community and take turns helping out at rehearsals, concerts and at camp.  
  • Space in the choir is highly valued. Singers who are unable to fulfill their commitment to the team will find their membership being reviewed.  
  • Fees are $190 which covers care of uniforms, lost music, venue expenses, camp participation, tour fees and other administrative costs
  • Performances: Choir performances throughout the year will include ChoralFest (November), the Winnipeg Music Festival (March), and four Divisional Choir concerts throughout the year (November, December, April, and May). Invitations to perform at other events will be considered and chosen at the director’s discretion. 
Before the Audition
  • Auditions will take place on May 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 at École Voyageur (37 Voyageur Ave) 
  • In order to audition each singer must:  1) Select a time on the following website: https://www.sjsdchoirs.ca/childrens  2) Fill out the Audition Application form below before attending the audition. 
During the Audition
We are looking for singers with an excellent work ethic and a flexible mindset! Please prepare for the following audition process: 
  • Warm up exercises (to determine range and vocal consistency throughout the range) 
  • Melodic sing-backs (echoing the director) 
  • Singing the canon/round "Fire's Burning," “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”, or “Frère Jacques” to determine vocal independence. 
  • **Note: there is no solo portion this year, please focus your attention on the canon/round!
After the Audition
Audition results will be sent to the provided email addresses in late-May.  Each school and music teacher will receive a complete list of choir members at the beginning of the 2024/2025 school year.
