2021-2022 Option Selection
At ECVS, junior high students participate in complimentary courses or commonly referred to options.  

Options will run at the following times each week:

Thursdays - Grade 8s Blocks 4 and 5

Instructions:

Please read through the following option descriptions that will be offered at ECVS during the 2021-22 school year. Select your top SIX choices from the options list. You will be placed in a new option every quarter, for a total of 4 options next year. Course fees have been included in the descriptions.

*Please complete this form by Friday, June 18th. Options will be filled over the next few weeks and you will know what you are in on your first day of school. *Options will run based on health regulations in September.

CTF Course Descriptions:

3D Modeling
In 3D Modeling, students will learn the basics of creating computer based models, the type you would find in video games and movies.  Using the web-based application "Sketchup", students start by learning to create simple objects in virtual space and eventually graduate to more complex forms like household objects and eventually, the interior and exterior of a house they design and build.  An enthusiasm for using computers is helpful, and students should bring their own computer mouse with them to make their workflow smooth and efficient.  This course has a $10 fee per student.

Art
This course is open to students with little or no past experience and to those who wish to expand their artistic talents! Students will take inspiration from the world around them, cultural traditions, and famous artists to create both drawings and compositions. Students will gain an understanding of the elements of art, experiment with various types of media, and investigate artistic styles of the past and modern times. Creations will incorporate water colour, paint, chalk, pencil, and pastels. Students will have the opportunity to display their artwork throughout the term and in a school-wide art show. This course has a $25 fee per student.

Canadian Politics
This course will give students the opportunity to learn about the different political structures and institutions that exist in Canada. Students will also develop an understanding for how they can be active and responsible citizens engaged in the democratic process.

Culinary Arts (Foods)
In this option, students will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to use a variety of food preparation techniques to plan and prepare nutritious, tasty and attractive foods. Students will critically think, work as a team and use time management in a kitchen setting. Students will also develop knowledge skills and attitudes that have immediate and future applications in their personal and family lives, as well as in local and global environments.  There will be a $30 fee per student.

Drama
This dynamic option will allow students to explore their creativity through various performance techniques.  They will participate in a variety of theatre sports (Improvisation!) that will help students develop their own creative process.  The course will focus on ensemble work, using your imagination and role-playing with an emphasis on movement and stage presence.  Students will have the opportunity to perform scripted short scenes, film an infomercial as well as develop a student created collective with a musical element. Students will learn about and participate in all aspects of a drama performance. This course has a $10 fee per student.

Entrepreneurship
In this option you will have the opportunity to work on your entrepreneurial skills by creating your own business! We will be learning about the basics including start-up plans, investment, marketing and sales. The end goal is a marketplace day where you will have an opportunity to run your business and hopefully see it thrive!  This course has a $10 fee per student.

Esthetics
Esthetics gives students the chance to explore the hair-styling and esthetics components of Cosmetology. They learn basic hair-styling, hair care, and braiding techniques, as well as skin care and manicuring. Students will learn how to use and experiment with their own items (makeup, skin care routine, hair accessories etc). Students will also learn health and safety requirements and regulations for hair/nail salon and other related workplaces.  
This course has a $15 fee per student.

Film Studies
Students will learn about different forms of film and media.  They will study and gain appreciation for the various techniques in creating film. They will create their own video projects using a variety of techniques and principles.  

French as a Second Language (FSL)
Bonjour mes amis! Welcome to French Second Language. A class where we explore the French language and culture! Together we will learn and expand our basic knowledge, improve our reading, writing and oral comprehension. Exploration through movies, stories, stations, music, and much more! This course has a $10 fee per student.

History Re-enacted
Love to discover, explore and learn about history and other cultures? Explore world history through re-enactment videos, movies and documentaries that bring history alive. History gives us the excitement of discovery and the reward of solving real-world problems. Analyzing history strengthens our critical thinking skills and trains us to gather evidence, and to find patterns and trends. You can apply information from the past to analyze and solve problems in the present. Studying history challenges us to think outside the box and be creative - and it's fun!

Money Management
Students can start planning for their futures - whether it is saving to buy a vehicle, new Playstation or figuring out the costs of their post-secondary education plans. Students will be guided in financial concepts such as debt, interest, savings accounts and budgeting. Students will also be provided guidance in applying for jobs through the job search, application process and resume creation as well as creative ways to make money.

Outdoor Education
This CTF student-centered program designed to enhance the participant’s learning ability, self-confidence, and self-discipline. The Outdoor Education course is an adventure in excellence where individuals can challenge themselves mentally, physically, socially, emotionally and culturally. The students will learn to utilize the outdoors as a classroom and incorporate many skills to live an active and healthy lifestyle. This course has a $10 fee per student.

Rock Band
Are you interested in trying out a guitar, bass, drums, or keys?  Would you like to learn about writing or recording music?  Do you want to be a singer? Do you think synths and electronic music are cool? This option is about exploring what your musical talents may be. Some familiarity or skill with an instrument is definitely an asset, but not necessary.  Want to bring your own instrument or laptop computer?  You can!  This option will be a mix of free exploration and traditional learning. This course has a $10 fee per student.

Scrapbook It!
Students, let your creativity take flight as you learn about basic but essential scrapbook designs and skills in Scrapbook It! Using both digital and paper resources, create a one of a kind scrapbook based on a theme of your choice. For example, Do you have pictures from your family vacation that need to be put into a scrapbook? What about making a scrapbook showcasing all of the fun you are having at ECVS? Choose a theme that is important to you and let the cutting and pasting begin. This course has a $10 fee per student.

Woodworking
Learn the tools and techniques of the wood shop and build with your hands. Build structures and props using nothing but cardboard. Create art or a functional object in CAD (Computer Aided Design) software and watch it be built in front of your eyes on the 3D Printer. This course will have a $40 fee per student.
