Thank you for your interest in the Third Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas. This questionnaire is meant to gauge interest, skill and level of commitment for individuals interested in participating in the Third Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas within in the Ottawa Region (Region 24).
The Ottawa Region is one of 47 Regions spread across Ontario. Several dozen participants dedicated hundreds of hours to identify some 180 species in the Ottawa Region in the First Atlas (1981-1985) and the Second Atlas (2001-2005). Additional information on the Atlas can be found at:
https://www.birdsontario.org/The Ottawa Region consists of 86 distinct 10km x 10km squares spread across seven counties including parts of Renfrew, Lanark, Frontenac, Prescott-Russell, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, and Leeds and Grenville counties, as well as all of Ottawa-Carleton.
It is a roughly “V”-shaped region bounded by the Ontario-Quebec border along the Ottawa River to the north; Westmeath and Cobden in the northwest; Norcan Lake in the Lanark Highlands to the southwest; Carleton Place and Black’s Corners in the south; Finch and Newington in the southeast; and, Wendover and Treadwell in the northeast.

Although anyone is welcome to participate in the Atlas, higher levels of birding skill will improve your efficiency and the amount you will be able to contribute. Birders of all skill levels may participate in a number of ways, including doing special surveys for owls and other groups, or submitting observations from anywhere in the province. While atlassing may involve finding actual nests, it also more likely involves observing certain behaviours and other evidence of breeding (e.g., singing, nest building, carrying food for young). Knowing birds' songs and other vocalizations is an important skill, so everyone is encouraged to work on those skills in advance of the Atlas.

Cependant, plus vous perfectionnez vos habiletés, plus votre contribution sera efficace et substantielle. Il y a plusieurs manières de participer soit en effectuant des sondages spéciaux pour les hiboux et autres groupes, ou soumettant des observations de n’importe où dans la province. L’atlassage peut impliquer de trouver des nids, il implique aussi l’observation de certains comportements et autres preuves de la présence d’oiseaux nicheurs (chant, construction de nid, porté de nourriture pour les jeunes). Reconnaître les chants et autres vocalisations d’oiseaux est une compétence importante, donc tout le monde est encouragé à travailler sur ces compétences avant l’atlas.
