Welcome! Thank you for your interest in this workshop. Baby Carrying and baby carriers are essential public health interventions. They are a tool for caregivers to use to connect with their children, meet everyone's individual needs, and manage the daily living needs of a caregiver with a young child.
This beginners workshop is intended for people interested in supporting caregivers with using their baby carriers, either through volunteer capacity with Bay Area Babywearing or in their own Community Models.
Baby carrying has rich ancestral roots in every culture, and in addition to education on the use of the carriers - this workshop will provide background on the origins of these carriers and how to educate respectfully on their use in communities, with this historical lens.
Workshop Content:
* Practice with 5 Major Carrier Types
(Stretchy Wrap, Woven Wraps, Ring Slings, Meh Dai's, Buckle Carriers)
* Proper Positioning by Developmental Stage
* Carrier Use and General Terminology
* Community teaching and using Inclusive Language
* Safety Considerations for Infant Feeding
* Addressing Baby Carrying Myths
* Further Resources for Learning
A 45 minute break will be scheduled for lunch (not provided).
Q&A
Do I need to be a baby carrying expert to attend?
No! Anyone can learn this information, and there will be ample opportunity to practice throughout.
Do I need my own carriers/doll to attend?
No! Carriers and dolls will be available for participants to practice with during the workshop.
What does a Volunteer commitment to Bay Area Babywearing entail?
We have so many options for volunteers! We need help with everything from teaching at monthly meetings to cataloging and photographing our libraries to maintaining social media, to posting monthly meetings online, to updating the website, to organizing social events, to washing carriers between meetings! We welcome help from all people, regardless of your comfort with teaching baby carrying.
If I can't come will you refund us?
Unfortunately, no. Donations to Bay Area Babywearing are non-refundable.
You will be more than welcome to attend future workshops!
Are masks required for attendance?
No, masks are not required. But they are recommended, especially in situations with close contact.
Will food be provided?
Light refreshments will be available throughout training, but no lunch will be provided.
Can my child/baby attend?
It is essential that the learning environment is comfortable for all attendees, so we ask that you be respectful of the needs of others to hear, concentrate, and learn. If you are bringing a child, be adequately prepared to meet their needs throughout, and to respectfully remove yourselves from the space when they are done being in it.
We believe firmly in respecting bodily autonomy. For children as well as adults. Consider if your child will want to be at this workshop before making this decision for yourself. Children who do not want to be somewhere can be disruptive to everyone around them (as is their right). If possible, we encourage you to make other arrangements for mobile babies/toddlers.
