3rd Annual Battle of the States - Volunteers & Event Supervisors
This year Michigan Science Olympiad will be running the 3rd Annual Battle of the States virtual invitational. We need your help to run a great tournament! This form is for both volunteers in general and Event Supervisors.

This tournament is open to teams in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and WisconsinWhile the events are run as usual, the twist of this tournament is that the final rankings are by state rather than team. Overall the intent is to be an accessible practice opportunity to a large number of teams.

The tournament will be administered via the Scilympiad.com platform across three monthly sessions in December 2023, January 2024 and February 2024, with the key dates described below.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!

Event Expectations
Please consider the following expectations before choosing your volunteer activities. As this is a virtual tournament meant to be accessible to a large number of teams, there will be expectations that aren't typical of every Science Olympiad competition.

B & C Divisions
For events that are offered to both Divisions, we would like to offer the same test to both Divisions, or a similar exam that is modified appropriately per Division.

Exams
Exams will be offered through the Scilympiad.com test platform. Exams should be designed to handle up to 200 teams per Division. Realistically, we expect 60 to 120 submissions per Division per event.

Every event is different, so ultimately it is up to the Event Supervisor to decide the best format for their test. Tests must be easily gradable and able to break ties for such a large number of teams. Please take advantage of the automatic grading feature within Scilympiad for Multiple Choice, True/False, and Select All That Apply question types. Our recommended format for an exam-only event is:
  • 70 to 120 auto-gradable questions (Easily grade and distinguish between a large number of teams)
  • 2 to 5 free response questions (To serve as last-resort tiebreakers)
See this document for more about best practices for this tournament.

Building Events
For building events we typically ask competitors to submit a video according to some standard guidelines. An associated "exam" can also be created in Scilympiad to add more instructions, reveal any unknown values to the competitors, and collect any desired text responses .

Other
For building and lab events, feel free to propose a non-traditional way to administer the exam or help prepare the students in another way (Exam themed around the activity, Rules quiz, etc.)

The 2024 Rules can be found at the National website here: https://www.soinc.org/rules-2024

What volunteer roles are you interested in?
Which events are you interested in?

We will not necessarily run every event, but the highest priority is to offer new events. If you are at all interested in Air Trajectory, Fossils, Geologic Mapping, Microbe Mission, Optics, Reach for the Stars, Robot Tour, Tower, or Wind Power, these will be the most appreciated!
Do you have any special proposals for events that may be difficult to conduct virtually?
