Big SIBS Application 2021
Support for Incoming Black Students (S.I.B.S.) is a year-long student coordinated peer mentorship program that is open to all students at the University of Michigan (U-M) who are interested in issues that affect the black community and who are dedicated to the retention and success of the students in the program. The goal of S.I.B.S. is to provide unique mentorship and educational opportunities for students on campus. This includes personal, academic, and professional development opportunities that create a fulfilling first-year experience and enhance community members' awareness of their experiences at U-M.

S.I.B.S. is a widely respected year-long student-run program that sustainably engages first-year students in the program. We work to provide a successful social and academic experience through mentorship and programming. S.I.B.S. provides incoming first-year students with:

An upper-class student mentor based on commonalities and factors such as identity, major, school, hometown, and other interests

What are the program's benefits?

Students are paired with a Mentor (Big SIBS) who help Mentees (Little SIBS) throughout their first year and help them with their transition to campus and college life.

Additional support and assistance navigating campus as a black student

Participants will receive leadership training and professional development opportunities throughout the year.

S.I.B.S. Lead Team provides monthly events that provide social and networking opportunities with students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Access to the support and resources of the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs.

Up-to-date information about active student organizations, university programs, and campus events.

Strengthen your skills as a student leader and young professional in academia

Increase your understanding of your identities and those of others

Connect with other organizations and supportive communities of peers

Work that involves social justice programming along with race and ethnicity educational conversation.

 
Mentor Expectations:

Attend S.I.B.S program Kickoff

Meet in person with your mentee face to face a minimum of one (1) hour per month and communicate with them on a weekly basis through email, text, and social media

Attend mandatory S.I.B.S programs--one (1) program per month

Complete program evaluations (i.e. surveys, mid-semester evaluations, etc.)
