DESCRIPTION
This placement test is designed to evaluate your reading comprehension skills in the Japanese language and should be used as a self-assessment tool to determine which course suits you best. This test uses rōmaji (English spelling) in addition to using Japanese script. At Japanese for Nikkei, we use rōmaji in our teaching materials until Part 3 of the beginner series as a means for our learners to "break into" the language as we have found that some of our learners face challenges when reading hiragana and katakana even though they know certain words and phrases. At JFN we will stop using rōmaji by the time students reach the elementary course series. Although our classes are focused on active use of Japanese (i.e., speaking and conversation practice), we do take the time at the end of each lesson to go over Japanese hiragana and katakana. Should you want advanced lessons with your writing, we encourage you take one of our private lessons: https://www.japanesefornikkei.com/private-lessons-
INSTRUCTIONS
You will answer 30 questions that will increase in difficulty. The test will take approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on your pace and prior knowledge. The questions increase in difficulty. If you are able to answer the first few questions with ease, but have difficulty answering the rest, the first few lessons of our program might be a useful refresher for you, and you will learn new concepts and vocabulary later on in our course.
Do not use the internet to help you answer questions as it will impact your results. It is crucial that you give this test your honest effort so that we can place you in the appropriate class. がんばってください!(Gambatte kudasai!)
HOW TO READ YOUR SCORE
- Part I is for absolute beginners and for those who studied Japanese but have forgotten the basics.
- You will receive your score after you submit your answers.
- If you score less than 25/30, we highly recommend that you take Beginners Part 1.
- If you got a near perfect score, we recommend that you take the placement test for Beginners Part 2.
The results of the test are by no means absolute, and we invite you to book a complimentary 15-minute consultation should you have any questions about your placement in our courses after having taken the test.
