Application for EBOW - Fall 2023

Welcome, dear applicants!

Are you a librarian or community leader who is passionate about engagement around local history and culture? Would you like to learn interactive storytelling or game design and build something real? Then this pilot is for you!

Below you can apply to be one of 20+ cities and towns nationwide in our pilot. Each participant will make outdoor games and interactive stories, such as text-with-a-sculpture, scavenger hunts, and more. Each must connect to a public library. For Fall 2023, applications are open through Monday, October 2, 2023.

What is this project?

This project is called "Engaging Beyond Our Walls" (or EBOW for short). It is an IMLS-supported project that was created by the DC Public Library (DCPL) and the Game Center at American University. Our three-year project offers libraries and/or collaborators the tools, training, and templates to create neighborhood games with Hive Mechanic, a game and interactive story authoring tool that utilizes text messaging technology and support for maker spaces.

MORE DETAILS on our program, including examples of successful projects: https://www.hivemechanic.org/workshops-for-libraries/recruiting1/

What is the program?

If selected, you will be responsible for investing at least an hour a week in October and November to be trained and build something real for your community. Most of the training is asynchronous and can be done at your convenience. In additional, we provide optional Zoom sessions weekly to connect with other projects, get support or advice and problem-solving. Acceptance does mean you will get to build something real, and many (perhaps all) the participating projects will have access to $300 in materials funding if they are building a project with the support of a public library.

Please provide your name (and your position at your organization, if relevant) *

Are there additional email addresses for other team members that we should include in our weekly instructions? If so, list them here separated by commas.

*
What public library are you proposing to work with, including to activate its outdoor space or use its archives? (Alternatively, if you are at a library, what are the community partners or groups you would like to work with?) A formal partnership with a library is not required immediately, but would eventually be necessary for access to the full materials budget. *
In a sentence or two, let us know more about your location and inspiration. Are you in a small town? Is there a particular monument you want to activate, or audience you want to reach? What is the nearest metro area? We are looking for a little context about your location.

What best describes your time and team situation?

*
What is your MOTIVATION for this project? (In a sentence or two, give us a hint of where you're coming from. For example, is there an outcome you are hoping to achieve? Or a skill you want to learn? There are no right answers, we are just curious what you are hoping for.)
