PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study is to understand the dynamic of cross-sex platonic friendships between two heterosexual members. With the main goal of comparing the difference in perspectives and how each member perceives the friendship.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDY PROCEDURES: Both members of the friendship will answer the survey alone. Before completing the survey, all pairs will agree on a code word to enter to ensure the anonymity of every participating member. This survey should be completed alone, and all information and answers, aside from the code word, should be kept private to ensure full honesty.

DURATION/TIME ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR INVOLVEMENT: Each participant will complete the survey one time and it should take less than 10 minutes to complete. The study and research done based off the survey results will span over a semester.

POTENTIAL RISKS OR DISCOMFORTS: The following questions may be of a personal nature and are possibly questions or topics you have not or choose not to think about regarding your friendship.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: This survey will provide researchers insight into how each gender perceives their male-female friendships. Research on cross-sex friendships has been neglected due to the newness and shifting in gender roles within the last 50 years.

CONFIDENTIALITY OF DATA: Our first goal for this survey is to preserve every participant anonymity, the purpose of the code word is to allow us to pair the responses to the friendships without the use of names or any other identifying information. The responses will be used in research but under terms to keep every participants identity anonymous.

CIRCUMSTANCES FOR DISMISSAL FROM THE STUDY: This survey is designed to be taken alone and if we were to learn otherwise than we would discard results. If a “code word” does not have a pair it would then be dismissed, as the main goal is to compare the responses between the two members in a friendship. Under the circumstance that more than one pair uses the same code word, the entire response group will be notified of the duplicate code work and given the option to change their word and complete the survey again. If that does not work than all responses under the same code word will be discarded.
