YCEDE PGR Mentoring: Mentee Registration

Are you interested in joining a cross-institutional mentoring programme for black, Asian and minority ethnic postgraduate research students across Yorkshire?

The Yorkshire Consortium of Equity in Doctoral Education (YCEDE) is formed of five Yorkshire Universities (York, Leeds, Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam and Bradford) who are committed to improving postgraduate research access and providing an equitable PhD experience for black, Asian and minority ethnic postgraduate researchers*.

The YCEDE PGR Mentoring programme has been created in consultation and collaboration with staff and PGRs from across the consortium to provide a bespoke mentoring programme for black, Asian and minority ethnic PGRs. The YCEDE PGR mentoring programme forms part of our commitment to ensuring we deliver an equitable PhD experience for black, Asian and minority ethnic PGRs across the consortium. This mentoring programme will provide PGRs the opportunity to discuss their experiences of postgraduate research and professional and career development with a trained mentor.

Registration is now open for interested postgraduate researchers who would like to become a YCEDE mentee.

Places are limited and we anticipate that we may not be able to offer all interested PGRs a mentor. Therefore, please note that registration does not guarantee that you will be able to participate in this round. However, the YCEDE PGR Mentoring programme will run every 6-months and YCEDE has an on-going, wider programme of events and opportunities available to join and engage with, please see ycede.ac.uk for more details

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We ask that interested PGRs can commit the following to the programme:

- Be able to meet with their mentor 6 times between July 2023 and Jan 2024. Meetings can be held online or in person and we would suggest having an expectation of each meeting being approximately an hour in duration.

- Be able to attend training which forms part of our support to both mentors and mentees. This includes an induction to the programme and mentoring practices and a bespoke session delivered by University of Bradford Centre for Inclusion and Diversity. These are two separate sessions (totalling 3.5 hours).

- Are committed to providing feedback to the programme.

This mentoring programme is not for PGRs seeking research-specific guidance or support as mentors will not be able to comment on your research. This programme is for those who wish to speak with a mentor about their experiences of postgraduate research and/or their professional and career development.

We look forward to hearing from you soon. If you have any questions, please email info@ycede.ac.uk

*We use the term black, Asian and minority ethnic student respectfully, although we know there are issues with this term. We recognise the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the cultural and ethnic identity of people within what is defined as black, Asian and minority ethnic.

YCEDE is developing a bespoke mentoring programme for black, Asian and minority ethnic postgraduate researchers. We are collecting this data so we can collect anonymised and aggregated data regarding the ethnicity of those participating.

Would you be happy to be matched with a mentor not based at the same university as yourself?

The YCEDE PGR Mentoring programme is open to mentors from all five consortium institutions. We expect both mentees and mentors may have preference in the location of their partner. In order to ensure we can provide mentees with matches please specify what your preference would be. We encourage participants to be open to a match outside of their institution and a holistic approach will be taken when matching, based on information provided from both mentees and mentors. Full support is provided to mentors and mentees, including a welcome pack with key contacts and information.
