ON DIRECTING NEW PLAYS with JAMES MACDONALD

Zoom Masterclass
A day that will explore working on new plays - offering ideas, techniques and stories to shed light on the process of collaborating with playwrights, actors and designers
James Macdonald was associate and deputy director of the Royal Court from 1992 – 2006. More recently he has worked for the National Theatre, the Donmar, the Almeida, Hampstead Theatre, the Royal Court and in the West End – directing work by Caryl Churchill, Lucy Kirkwood, Annie Baker, Mike Bartlett, Edward Albee, Cordelia Lynn, Rory Mullarkey, William Congreve, Anne Carson and Euripedes. In New York he has worked for the Public Theater, the Lincoln Center, the Atlantic, NYTW - and on Broadway for MTC and Roundabout. He also directed the film version of A NUMBER for HBO/BBC.

Zoom Masterclass
A day of tips, exercises and inspiration - to give you an insight into a playwright’s process, and help you start, shape and finish a brand new play.
Rory Mullarkey’s plays include Pity, Saint George and the Dragon, The Wolf from the Door, Cannibals and The Grandfathers. His work has been produced across the UK, including the at National Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, the Royal Exchange Theatre, and the Bristol Old Vic, as well as internationally. He also translates plays from Russian, and has written the libretti for three operas.
