Trauma Informed Communication
Dr. Teri Hargrave
This presentation will discuss symptoms and signs of
trauma and trauma triggers, de-escalation, resources, and safety. This
presentation is beneficial to all career fields and can be adapted to meet the
needs of mediators and attorneys. How do you tell if someone is in a
dissociative state? What can we do to reduce re-traumatization? The justice
system and being in conflict are triggering for the majority of individuals.
How can we help them? ADR professionals, attorney/mediators and attorneys
interact with people who have survived trauma every day. These are individuals
who have been through experiences that caused intense physical and
psychological stress reactions. High conflict dynamics can cause a form of PTSD
in the participants. Often the trauma experienced by individuals can have
lasting adverse effects on their physical, social, and emotional well-being,
impacting how they interact with others and experience the world. This session
will explore how to a foster a healthier environment and culture by using
trauma-informed communication and conflict management to understand and
successfully engage with people who have been impacted by trauma. She will
share her personal experiences on how ADR professionals, attorney/mediators and
attorneys can communicate with their clients who have experienced trauma to
help them think more clearly and make better decisions for themselves.
Dr. Teri Hargrave joined Clay County's Office of Dispute Resolution as a
volunteer in 2014, facilitating Community Justice Boards. She completed her
internship for the Graduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution from Missouri
State University in 2016, and her practicum for a Master of Science in
Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from Creighton University School of Law in
2018 through ODRS. She successfully finished her doctorate in Educational
Doctorate in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in conflict management
in 2022. The emphasis of her Master's Thesis and Doctoral dissertation was on
trauma, school attendance, and the judicial system. Previously, she served as a
Deputy Juvenile Officer at the Clay County Girls Group Home from 2016-2018, until
she joined the staff of ODRS in March, 2018. In 2022, Teri became the Director
of the Office of Dispute Resolution. Teri’s education, training and experience
working with families has enabled her to provide staff and volunteer training
in trauma awareness, initiate a truancy intervention, School Attendance Matters
(SAM), Mother-Daughter Circles, and mentoring. She has provided trauma training
to the Clay County Deputy Juvenile Officers, detention staff, and CASAs. She
has also provided trainings for Missouri State University, Johnson County
