Sign-Up to Participate in the Advancing Inclusive Mentoring (AIM) Program
Cal Poly is piloting the Advancing Inclusive Mentoring (AIM) AIM Program in the first three weeks of Summer Session 1 (between M 6/26 to F 7/14). There is no cost to participate. This training is open to all faculty, staff, post-docs, and graduate students who mentor students participating in research, scholarly, and creative activities.

This pilot is co-led by the Office of Student Research, the Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology, CENG & CLA SURPs, and the Empowering Autistic Scholars Program.

If you are not available during the first three weeks of Summer Session 1 but want to be notified of future offerings, you have the opportunity to indicate this below.

Please complete this form by F 6/16/23.

The Advancing Inclusive Mentoring (AIM) program is a mentor training program developed at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Initiative. The overarching goals of AIM are to provide a variety of engaging faculty training resources to promote student success through positive and inclusive mentoring. Because student involvement in high impact practices such as research, scholarly, and creative activities can boost student success – particularly when associated with strong mentorship – learning the best practices for mentoring is a critical component of facilitating student success.

The AIM program is a hybrid program: 35 short videos across six learning modules are accompanied by six synchronous Zoom-based discussions as part of building/strengthening a community of practice around mentoring at Cal Poly.
  • Module 1: Communicating with your Mentees
  • Module 2: Inclusive Mentoring
  • Module 3: Cultivating Mentee Growth & Development
  • Module 4: Facilitating Mentee Health & Wellbeing
  • Module 5: Mentee-Centered Mentoring
  • Module 6: Mentoring Toolbox
The AIM program is set up to run much like a book club where participants engage with the online materials on their own time for asynchronous learning and then come together for 50-minute Zoom-based discussion of each module. We estimate that completing the 6 modules and participating in the discussions will take a total of 12 hours.

By signing up, you are committing to participate in at least 4 of 6 discussions.

Discussion meeting times via Zoom are scheduled as:
  • T 6/27, 12:10-1pm (discuss Module 1)
  • Th 6/29, 12:10-1pm (discuss Module 2)
  • Th 7/6, 12:10-1pm (discuss Module 3)
  • F 7/7, 12:10-1pm (discuss Module 4)
  • T 7/11, 12:10-1pm (discuss Module 5)
  • Th 7/13, 12:10-1pm (discuss Module 6)
Individuals who meet the requirements as listed in the CTLT Stipend Eligibility Policies are eligible for a $300 stipend to encourage their participation. These "stipended participants" will produce and share an artifact of their participation (e.g.., an updated or annotated policy or practice; more info to follow!) by F 7/28/23. This will be optional for "non-stipended participants."
