DCPL 2023 HAIKU CONTEST Entry Form
Participating branches of the DC Public Library invite you to compete in a haiku contest this April!    

Write a haiku about one of the following themes:
✎ a DC moment / observed in DC,
 something you're grateful for,
✎ seasons, or
✎ something small and wild.
 
Contest runs April 1-30 in honor of National Poetry Month.  Prize-winners will take home library swag and have their poem posted in the library and on the DCPL website in May.    
 
Each branch will select children’s (6-12), teen (13-19) and adult winners.

Tips for Writing Haiku
Haiku traditionally have three short lines that capture a moment, image or feeling.  

The standard form is 5 syllables in the first line,
7 syllables in the second line
and 5 syllables in the last line.

Syllable count is not an absolute rule though.  The key is to distill a human experience into a very short poem.
