In the last legislative session a new law was passed that does not allow school to start before the second Monday preceding Labor Day (two weeks before Labor Day). Per the law, the 2022-23 school year will not start before August 22.
A second new law affecting the school calendar gives schools the authority to use instructional hours rather than days, with a minimum of 1,068 hours and 30 extra hours built in for inclement weather. With no change to the current daily schedules, Searcy School District offers more than the minimum instructional hours, which would allow three days to be removed from the current 178 student interaction days.
With the later start, districts will not be able to implement a traditional school calendar with an end date before Memorial Day given the length of the current holiday breaks. For example, the traditional calendar and the current length of holiday breaks would put the last day of school June 1, the Thursday after Memorial Day. In the past, it was important to our families to end the school year by Memorial Day.
As we plan for the next school year, we need the input of our staff and families in building our school calendar. Please take a few minutes to indicate how important the following items are to your family.
PLEASE COMPLETE THIS FORM BY Wednesday January 12th AT NOON and please submit only once response.
