Progress in artificial intelligence, by many important measures, has accelerated dramatically recently with the success of very-large-scale self-supervised training of neural networks. Ensuring this goes well is a key priority e.g. as discussed here: https://wp.nyu.edu/arg/why-ai-safety/

This AI Alignment course is designed to introduce key concepts in AI safety and alignment. It will give you space to engage with, evaluate and debate these ideas. You’ll meet others who are excited to help mitigate risks from future AI systems, and explore opportunities for your next steps in the field. This course was originally designed by Richard Ngo and will be facilitated by Ruben Castaing, a masters student in data science who is interested in AI Alignment.

Successful applicants will follow a seven-week program consisting of study resources, discussion groups and exercises about a range of selected topics. Fellows are expected to spend 1.5-4 hours on reading and exercises plus 1 hour of discussion per week, resulting in a total commitment time of 2.5-5 hours per week.

Week 1: Introduction to Machine Learning
Week 2: AI and the Years Ahead
Week 3: Reinforcement learning from human/AI feedback
Week 4: Scalable Oversight
Week 5: Interpretability
Week 6: Technical governance approaches
Week 7: Careers and projects

Bonus week 8: Governance

No subject knowledge is required; the programme is self-contained, so fellows should not worry if they are not familiar with, say, machine learning. However, we do expect  1. Enthusiasm 2. Openness to novel ideas 3. A scientific mindset

We use this form to get a better sense of how the program might help you, and to check that you’ll have enough time for the required content. Applying does not secure you a spot in the Intro Fellowship, as we may not have capacity for all applicants. First fellowship group meeting will be in the week of March 11th Your time is valuable, so please don't spend more than 30 minutes on this, total. If you have any questions, please reach out by email or to Gavin Bishop or Ruben Castaing on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/gavin.bishop.73/ , +64 278855639
