AIA: Reports from the Field

UC Berkeley graduate students kick off the academic year at our annual Reports from the Field event, reporting on their summer research and excavation experiences at various sites across the globe. Madolyn Hyytiainen-Jacobson will speak about the Nemea Center for Classical Archaeology’s excavation of eight chamber tombs at the Bronze Age cemetery, Aidonia. Efforts this summer were spent cleaning and cataloging the remains as part of an ongoing collaboration with the Max Planck institute.  This summer 29 Samples from throughout the cemetery were selected, and will be analyzed with the goal of helping understand familial relationships in chamber tombs throughout the Bronze Age. Rebecca Levitan will focus on recent research efforts on ancient sculpture at the site of Sperlonga (Lazio, Italy). The project focuses on the digital documentation of thousands of marble fragments from the so-called “Grotto of Tiberius” – an ancient cave decorated in the Roman period with an elaborate sculptural program depicting scenes from the Odyssey and Iliad. Darcy Tuttle will give an overview of the history of the ancient site of Gabii, located just outside Rome and will discuss the preliminary findings of the most recent excavation season, which they hope will shed light on ongoing research into processes of urbanization and de-urbanization.
