Katja Nelson, MPP, is the Local Affairs Specialist at APLA Health, a federally qualified health center in Los Angeles, California. As part of the Government Affairs Division she engages in policy and advocacy work with the City and County of Los Angeles and collaborates with a broad group of community partners on a wide range of issues. Her work primarily addresses health care access and affordability, health equity, and housing and homelessness issues for people living with and at risk for HIV, the LQBTQ community, and other underserved and vulnerable communities. She sits on the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV as the representative for third district Supervisor Sheila Kuehl and co-chairs the public policy committee. She also participates in policy research through the California HIV/AIDS Policy Research Centers (CHPRC) and served on the UCLA CFAR Community Advisory Board. She completed her graduate degree in Public Policy with concentrations in health policy and international policy from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs in 2015. While at Luskin she worked under Dr. Arleen Leibowitz and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research to conduct an evaluation of California’s DSRIP program for Category 5 (HIV/AIDS). She received a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Russian Studies from UCLA in 2012.

Students are expected to arrive on time and remain throughout the workshop. There is a 15-minute grace period at the beginning and the end of the workshop. If a student arrives after or leaves before the 15-minute grace period, their attendance for that workshop will not count towards the prerequisites for the experiential learning capstone, nor towards the Life After Luskin: Leadership Development Series Certificate of Completion.
