Join us in celebration of Indigenous People's Day! This year, INDIGENOUS 2023 celebrates the sovereignty of Wabanaki people, highlighting both the challenges and triumphs of recognition and respect. A collaboration that includes Healthy Acadia, Firefly, the Abbe Museum, The Jackson Laboratory, College of the Atlantic, Friends of Acadia, Neptune Advantage, and Global Tides Consulting is offering an array of events listed below beginning on Sunday October 1st. All are welcome to attend and RSVP for any and all offerings! There is no cost.

Strengthening Relationships with Cultural Competency: Increasing Understanding of the Passamaquoddy Tribe with Elizabeth Neptune

We invite you to explore elements for building and enhancing your cultural competence with nationally-recognized facilitator Elizabeth Neptune. This session, which is free and open to the public, will examine several elements of cultural competence including awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and assumptions, with significant emphasis on honoring diversity and cultural differences. Participants will review broad elements of cultural competence and culturally competent organizations, explore working with diverse populations, gain a greater understanding of the impact of trauma, and address issues of race, equity, and inclusion. This is an in-person only event.

Cultural Humility: Coffee time with Elizabeth Neptune

This session will offer a uniquely tailored look into cultural humility from an indigenous perspective. In order to practice true cultural humility, a person must also be aware of and sensitive to historic realities like legacies of violence and oppression against certain groups of people. The last 30 minutes will allow for questions and/or discussion of the topics outlined in the presentation

Our Bodies Carry our Personal Stories and the Stories of Our Ancestors – Reconciling the Harmful Effects of Historical Trauma While Focusing on our Individual Healing Journeys

Donna Decontie Brown will define historical trauma and how it has affected Native Americans throughout generations, spanning both time and place; identify genocidal practices in Maine and Indian Country throughout history; understand how the effects of historical trauma can resurface with current events; and identify ways to address historical trauma and foster healing in our Native American communities so that we can begin to focus on thriving rather than just surviving.

Donna is a citizen of the Penobscot Nation of Indian Island, Maine, and the Algonquin First Nation of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg located in Maniwaki, Quebec. Donna is the co-owner of Decontie & Brown, Inc. along with her husband Jason K. Brown also of the Penobscot Nation. Donna Brown also serves as the Executive Director of the Wabanaki Women’s Coalition, a non-profit tribal domestic and sexual violence coalition that serves the Wabanaki tribes of Maine.

In celebration of Indigenous People's Day the Abbe Museum will offer Free Admission. Explore some of the most important collections of Wabanaki cultural material and art in the world at this Smithsonian Affiliated museum in the heart of Bar Harbor, Maine at Pesumkuk in Wabanaki Territory.
