The work of becoming an antiracist teacher isnโt a lesson plan or a rapid response to breaking news. The work of undoing the harm of both systemic and internalized elements of racism and white supremacy is challenging and can be a life-long journey. Our panel series and the partnerships created at these events help ensure that the work can continue and grow into better practices in all school settings โ public, private, and charter.
Join us for a live workshop with author and artist Anastaisia Higginbotham.
Named by People Magazine in their 25 Women Changing the World list, Anastasia writes books for children to help them explore challenging topics in words and concepts that they can understand. Her series of books, Ordinary Terrible Things, includes books that address death, sex, divorce, White supremacy, and more. She crafts narratives that leave room for important conversations and questions and also creates the art for her books using a beautiful style of collage.
She has been featured in The Atlantic and the New York Times, and has made dozens of appearances at libraries, colleges, and bookstores. She first met with the teacher of The Educators' Cooperative in 2018 for a book talk and group discussion about how to teach identity in elementary grades
The event is virtual. Attendees will participate in an action-planning/resource sharing session.
