www.neiu.edu/literacycenter The Literacy Center at Northeastern Illinois University is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2024 Tutoring Program. Students in grades 2 through 12 reading below grade level and/or experiencing reading difficulties are eligible for participation. Participating students receive an in-depth diagnosis of reading difficulties and individualized instruction to improve reading skills. The tutors are graduate students enrolled in an advanced degree program to become Reading Specialists or earn a Reading Teacher Endorsement. All assessment and instructional sessions are supervised by a Literacy Education faculty member.
The Summer 2024 term includes fourteen 60-minute sessions (across 8 weeks) that will take place in-person on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Literacy Center on NEIU's main campus.
Sessions for younger students meet from 5-6pm; sessions for older students meet 6:15pm-7:15pm. Student placements are determined by the Literacy Center Director. Sessions will begin June 3rd and end on July 22nd. There will be NO sessions on Wednesday, June 19th in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. The program cost is $150 for the term.
PLEASE NOTE: Punctual and consistent attendance is critical so that our graduate students can complete all requirements. Please apply only if your child is available for each of the session dates. Thank you!
***While we do serve students who may receive some Special Education services, our program is not a good fit for children with severe learning disabilities as our graduate students (tutors) are not all trained in the area of Special Education. If you have any questions about the suitability of our program for your child, please call Dr. Madda, the Literacy Center Director, at 773-442-5457.
****The Literacy Center is NOT an enrichment program intended to serve gifted children or those reading above grade level. Our tutoring program is also not intended to assist with homework or college entrance exams such as ACT or SAT.
