Renewable Energy
Energise South Downs (ESD) is a recently established Community Energy Co-Op based in Petersfield, servicing the western end of the Downs.

Never heard of an Energy Co-Op? In a nutshell, they find suitable renewable energy projects in their local area; raise capital from members, who often reside nearby; carry out the installation; sell the energy locally for less than it would have cost from the grid; and pay back investors from the sale of this energy. Assuming suitable sites can be found, it’s a very simple and effective model that brings significant benefit to local communities and businesses alike.

The South Downs is home to some of the longest established and most respected Community Energy Co-Ops in the UK. Since 2007, OVESCO has been successfully developing and managing 15 solar projects in the Lewes area, while Brighton Energy Co-op has invested over £3 million in 62 solar projects since 2010.

Local projects that ESD is currently working on include rooftop solar arrays for a brewery, a number of schools, farms and other energy intensive businesses.
