The MMSD Guidance & Policies to Support Transgender, Non-binary & Gender-Expansive Students was developed to protect gender expansive students from harmful situations, such as being forced out of home or verbally/physically abused by a transphobic community member.

A specific guidance is being challenged and its repeal would open the door to harrassment, bullying, homelessness, forced conversion therapy, sexual and physical abuse, and other manifestations of transphobia. The guidance in question states: "school staff shall not disclose information that may reveal a student’s gender identity to others, including parents or guardians and other school staff, unless legally required to do so orunless the student has authorized such disclosure."

Students should have the choice of coming out to their families because they, better than anyone else, will know if such disclosure will subject them to transphobia. Support this guidance to protect and support the gender expansive community.
