Homer Thomas III Memorial Scholarship
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity’s motto, “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity”.
Homer Thomas III, a Spring 1999 Initiate of the Mighty Mu Epsilon Chapter, who passed away after a long battle with diabetes also believed in this motto. Brother Thomas, along with all brothers of our chapter, also believe in a strong emphasis on scholarship.
We seek an applicant that upholds the ideals of scholarship and service. Scholarships are awarded based on a scoring process. The student must be a freshmen enrolled at Florida State University, and apart of the Florida State University's Center for Academic and Retention Enhancement (CARE) Program. The total awarded will be in the amount of $100 devoted to the purchasing of books for class.
