Job description: This is a combination position of lab manager and programmer. This position is excellent especially for post-baccalaureates who want to pursue graduate school in social sciences. Through this position, you will receive training in psychological science, how to conduct empirical research, and receive mentorship about graduate school with the possibility of co-authorship given substantive intellectual contribution. You will have the chance to possibly collaborate with lab members on research projects and attend or present at scientific meetings.

We are committed to creating and participating in a supportive, diverse, and welcoming lab environment where everyone’s ideas and experiences are respected.  We are interested in lab members with diverse backgrounds, interests, and skills. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

We strive to make our science as transparent as possible, and are committed to open science best practices, including pre-registration and sharing of data, code, and materials.

The lab manager part of this position entails leadership over a broad variety of tasks associated with managing the lab, experiments, and research assistants.  The person would work closely with the faculty principal investigator (PI), and with the grad students, postdocs, and undergrad research assistants in the lab. The person should be interested in psychological research, and ideally (but not necessarily) have experience with either participating in or running psychology experiments in a lab.  Prior leadership experience is ideal (but does not have to be in a psych lab!). The specific hours per week (which days, which time ranges) are somewhat flexible.

Specific responsibilities of the lab manager aspect of the position include:

  • Supporting lab members in conducting and running experiments
  • Helping with stimuli creation, experiment design, and administration logistics
  • Organization and management of data and materials
  • Maintaining equipment, overseeing lab space
  • Organizing lab meetings and lab communications
  • Recruiting, training, and managing research assistants
  • Helping with managing lab expenses

The programmer part of the position entails being in charge of creating web-based psychology experiments and stimuli.  The successful applicant should be experienced in front-end web programming, with a particular emphasis on user-friendly interactive programming in javascript/jQuery, as well as HTML/CSS.  Proficiency with cross-browser compatibility testing and experience with or willingness to learn some PHP and asynchronous programming with AJAX, as well as Qualtrics and Squarespace, is also required.  A take-home skills assessment will be part of the interview process.
Required skills for programming:
  • The ability to upload/interface with files on a server via FTP applications
  • Proficiency in JQuery JS or Python, HTML, and PHP
  • Willingness to learn Qualtrics and Squarespace
