Lesson Objectives
After the Lesson 1 lessons are complete, your child should be able to:
  • appreciate they belong to a loving community
  • distinguish between loving and unloving actions
  • distinguish actions that bring people together from those that leave people out
  • recognize how Jesus asks them to treat others
  • preview their First Reconciliation preparation
Opening Prayer
Loving God, be with us as we begin to prepare to celebrate First Reconciliation.  Help us to listen to one another and to share.  Help us to remember that we are together in Jesus.  Amen.
First, let's begin by locating your "Together in Jesus: First Reconciliation" Lesson 1 booklet. Also, be sure to have the sticker sheet that came with your booklets. Once you have both of these, locate the heart shaped sticker on your sticker sheet and place it on the front page at the place indicated. Great job! Now let's read a story about a couple of friends. Let's read about Matt, Damian and Nick on page 1 and 2 of your lesson. As you read the story, be thinking about whether it is easier to do something with two other friends or just one friend. When you are done with the story, please answer the questions below.
On Monday, what action did Damian take to include Nick? *

What action did Damian take that left Nick out? *

On Tuesday, did Matt deliberately make plans to avoid Nick? *

Great job! In this story, we see that all three boys were faced with a problem. Nick wanted to be part of things that were going on, but he was an outsider. Damian wanted to do things with both his friend and his cousin, and Matt wanted Damian to do what they had planned before Nick came. In this story, we see both loving and unloving actions that were made by Matt and Damian. But the important thing is that, in the end, the three friends learned how to work together so that they could all have fun. It is important that we are able to distinguish between loving and unloving actions, and learn how to solve our problems in a loving way.
The sacrament of Reconciliation isn't just about confessing your sins; it's about a lot more than that. Reconciliation is an amazing gift of love. As we read more over the next several lessons, we will find out more about this amazing love. For now, we are going to learn about a very special prayer that is said when we go to confession. That prayer is the "Act of Contrition." Let's go to the next section to learn more about this prayer.
ACT OF CONTRITION:  You might be asking what is the "Act of Contrition"? Contrition means we say we are sorry. We admit that we were wrong. The "Act of Contrition" is a prayer that does that. In the "Act of Contrition," we acknowledge our sins, ask God for forgiveness, and express our desire to repent. The "Act of Contrition" is not only a great prayer for Reconciliation, it is also a great prayer we can say every day, especially before we go to bed at night. It's a prayer that allows us to examine our conscience to see how much of a “Christ-like” day we’ve lived versus a sinful one. Let's take a minute to locate your "Act of Contrition" card.  Use the prayer daily to help you end your day and to help memorize the prayer for First Reconciliation.
Did you practice the "Act of Contrition" this week? *

Super great job! You have just begun your sacramental prep journey and are off to a great start. I want you to remember that "Reconciliation is a Celebration." It is a celebration of God's power to make all things new for us!! We will continue to learn more about this celebration as we continue our lessons!
