Given the continued prevalence of Covid-19 nationally and internationally, travel restrictions, and the uncertainty and financial constraints faced by many scholars, the 2022 International Symposium on Autoethnography and Narrative (ISAN) will be a fully online conference. The conference will occur via Zoom on January 2-5, 2022. Eastern Standard Time (EST) will be used for all conference activities.

ISAN will provide scholars and practitioners of all experience levels an opportunity to present their autoethnographic and personal narrative projects and to participate in dialogue and sociability with scholars across a variety of disciplines. We invite submissions of papers, performances, and panels to be considered for presentation. Creative and innovative approaches to autoethnography and personal narrative are encouraged. Submissions might:
• Use autoethnography and/or personal narrative to engage social, political, cultural, and personal issues
• Address theoretical or methodological aspects of autoethnography and narrative
• Interrogate or advance autoethnographic and narrative practices

Proposals should take the form of an extended abstract (500-750 words). Given time and space limitations, participants are limited to two proposals. The deadline to submit a proposal is AUGUST 1, 2021.

Complete the form below to submit a proposal. You will receive a confirmation message when you complete this form. If you receive the confirmation message, then your submission has been received. You will NOT receive a confirmation email.

Additional details:

• All proposals will be peer reviewed.

• Proposal acceptances will be sent by September 15, 2021.

• After a proposal is accepted, presenters will have until November 15, 2021 to record and submit a video of their presentation. Presenters will upload the video to YouTube (preferred) or to Vimeo, OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive for conference attendees to watch. More information about creating and submitting the video will be forthcoming in September.

• The actual conference (January 2-5, 2022) will consist of discussion sessions devoted to the video presentations. Each session will have a moderator who will keep time, starting and ending the session, and monitoring that each panelist has an opportunity to talk about their presentation.  Participants will not present during these sessions; they already will have presented via the prerecorded video. Instead, these sessions will be interactive, providing a space for panelists to meet and talk to other panelists, for audience members to ask questions and make comments, and for the moderator to offer brief commentary, if desired. To encourage participation and stimulate discussion, we suggest that each panelist provide a brief (2-3 minute) summary of their video at the start of the (live) conference session.

• Registration will cost $25 (USD) for all participants. Participants must use PayPal to pay the registration fee. If a participant does not have PayPal, they will need to sign up for an account, or have someone use PayPal to pay on their behalf. Only those who have registered for the conference will have access to panels, workshops, and social events. (If a participant is experiencing financial hardship and cannot pay the $25 registration fee, we will have a limited number of opportunities to assist with the conference in exchange for a waived registration fee. To be considered for a registration fee waiver, contact Tony Adams [tony.e.adams@gmail.com] by November 15, 2021.)

• Conference registration will open September 15, 2021. Presenters must register for the conference by November 15, 2021. Presenters will only appear in the final conference program if they have a) submitted the link to their presentation and b) registered for the conference.

• By December 1, 2021, the program will be available for all registrants. Registrants will have at least one month to view the presentations (via links). If a registrant is interested in a particular presentation, they should watch the video before the conference begins (January 2-5, 2022).

• All presentation links, discussion sessions, and other conference activities will only be available to registrants. However, participants should recognize that a registrant possibly could share these links or recorded sessions without permission. Although we cannot totally control these unethical practices, we will take every precaution to constrain them. If any participant is found to be sharing or recording a session without permission, they will not be allowed to continue participating in this conference or in any future conferences organized by this Association. Unfortunately, if a participant has concerns about online privacy, sharing, and recording, then it is probably best that they refrain from participating in the conference.

• In the next few months, we will develop and share some possible publication opportunities for conference presenters. We are still working out the details.

We look forward to working with everyone virtually!
