First Annual Historical Political Economy Conference

Co-organized by Allison Hartnett, Assistant Professor of Political Science; and Jeffery A. Jenkins, Provost Professor of Public Policy, Political Science, and Law

University of Southern California

Tentative dates: Oct. 18–19 or Oct 19–20, 2024

Deadline for paper proposals is May 1.

The conference is sponsored by the University of Southern California’s Center for International Studies (CIS), the USC Political Institutions and Political Economy (PIPE) Collaborative, the USC Department of Political Science and International Relations, and the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

Historical Political Economy (HPE) is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field, but it has not benefited from an annual conference where scholars can workshop cutting-edge papers on topics like state-building, economic development, colonialism, nationalism, and globalism. This 2024 conference – and planned conferences in succeeding years – will remedy this situation.

We invite you to participate in this inaugural conference by indicating your interest as a prospective a presenter, discussant, or attendee. Please fill out this form by May 1st as per your interest.

Limited funding is available for participants who have a formal role in the conference. If you kindly agree to be a presenter, you are expected to submit a draft of the paper no later than a week before the conference begins.

We would be happy to answer any questions; email us at CIS@dornsife.usc.edu. Deadline: May 1.

Is your attendance at the conference as a presenter or discussant dependent on receiving funding for transportation and hotel accommodations?

Note: Our plan is to distribute most of our funding to PhD students and junior faculty. We encourage more senior faculty – if they are able – to cover their own travel and accommodations.
