Secondary 1 Math 2019-2020
Welcome to Secondary Math 1! I’m looking forward to a great year as we work together to develop important math skills. We will be doing quite a bit of discovery learning and problem solving to deepen understanding of mathematical concepts.

SUPPLIES:

For this class you will need:
Notebook/binder with paper for notes and assignments.
Pencils (sharpen before bell rings)
A scientific calculator/graphing calculator (I do have some to use in class)
A textbook will be checked out to you. The book can also be accessed online from my website. (You will be responsible for any loss/damage to the book)

ACADEMIC GRADES:

Grading Scale:
A = 93%-100% C = 73%-75%
A- = 90%-92% C- = 70%-72%
B+ = 86%-89% D+ = 66%-69%
B = 83%-85% D = 63%-65%
B- = 80%-82% D- = 60%-62%
C+ = 76%-79% F = Below 60%

CITIZENSHIP GRADES:
Good citizenship is important to maintain as it directly affects the quality of education for all students in the classroom. Citizenship will be determined by behavior, attitude, tardies, and effort. Failure to follow directions, excessive talking, swearing, lack of respect, destruction of classroom property, lack of preparedness, cheating, and poor use of class time are examples of unacceptable behavior.

Assignment/notes/projects:
Math is a subject that requires practice to reinforce concepts. Therefore, homework/assignments will be given frequently. Class time will be given for students to work on assignments as time allows.

We will take a few minutes at the beginning of class to answer questions you have on the assignment the day following the assignment is given.

Assignments that are turned in on time may be corrected for a higher score.

Students who are absent when an assignment is given are responsible to find out what the assignment is. Assignments are posted on the white board calendar and my website each day.

Late Work:
Late work will be accepted until we take the test for that unit with a 20% deduction. These assignments will be marked in the portal with an “A” meaning the student was absent the day the assignments was given, or with an “M” meaning the assignment is missing. If an assignment has a score of zero and it is not marked “A” or “M”, that assignment is no longer being accepted.

Scores for late work will not be immediately entered into the portal. It may take a few days.  No late work will be accepted the last week of the quarter to allow me time to enter grades.

Late assignments may not be redone for a higher score.

Warm-ups
At the beginning of each class, we will have a short warm-up. Warm-up problems receive credit for participation.

In order to receive credit, all work must be shown for the problem.

Tests:
Students may come in for test corrections after they have taken the test once. If they rework the problem correctly they may earn back full points.

Extra Credit
I will periodically offer extra credit assignments or problems as part of what we are learning. If you choose not to do the extra credit when it is offered, there will not be additional extra credit at the end of the quarter.

Extra Help
I understand that everyone comes to this class with unique experiences, interests and learning styles. My goal is to help you succeed in this class. I will be available after school most days for extra help.

Portal:
Please check your grade regularly online so you are aware of how you are doing in my class. I will be updating the grades at least weekly.
