HS Kids Work Study
HS Kids WORK-STUDY INFORMATION

Every work-study contract at Humanities Spring is worked out on an individual basis.
Students might do anything from washing windows to organizing our library loft or from student-teaching to helping our Italian cook make Italian cakes for evening serate. We think work is a learning experience, and every student at Humanities Spring has a half-hour daily chore, whether or not he or she is part of the work-study program. We try to create work-study schedules which are fruitful for the work-study student, as well as the HSIA community at large. Occasionally, we award small scholarships to supplement work-study.

The Finances

High school students may apply for up to 500 dollars of work-study. College students may apply for a partial or full work-study scholarship. Full work-study schedules require energy and determination. Several students have been at HS on full work-study scholarships; they have found their summers tiring, at times, as well as fruitful and stimulating. We calculate student work at about 8 dollars an hour – but we are not rigid about this If you are applying, for example, for five hundred dollars in work-study, you will do anywhere between 45 and 65 hours of work-study... We will work out your schedule with you so that it seems fair and productive to everyone. We want the work to be a part of the experience that you learn from and enjoy.

The Dates

Work-study students often do the bulk of their work in the weeks before the program begins or the week after it ends to leave them freer when they are actively engaged in the learning (and travel!) that is HSABC. But don't worry, if you can only come for the duration of the program, we will do our best to make this work out – but we may well not be able to award you more than 300 USD in work-study.

The Work

Most of the work-study help we need is in kitchen duty, housework, driving (college students) and maintenance. There is some student-teaching and gardening available for students with experience, and occasional tutoring or homework help for our Italian students.
Kitchen duty: helping our Italian cook, washing dishes, making cookies or cakes, sandwich duty before our day-trips, dinner duty.
Housework: laundry with the HSIA machine, sweeping, etc. -- whatever housekeeper needs on a given day. Driving: you must have an international driver's license (easy to get in the USA with a regular American license), know how to drive a stick shift, and be confident on country roads.
Maintenance: varies most each year. Could be: washing windows, doing heavy work in HSIA garden, sewing curtains, making book-ends, etcetera.
Student-teaching: varies, could be helping to correct Italian 1 homework papers, tutoring Italian students in English, or giving a class or mini-course on a HSABC related topic (you may propose these and we will review and give you our feedback.

What is your name (as it appears on your passport?)
What is your date of birth?
Which sessions of HS Kids are you interested in?Please put a check belownext to the sessions at which you would like to do work-study (these are all the 2021 Kids sessions which will be running both before and after the HSABC session).
Please rank (1,2 & 3) which HS Kids activities you would be most interested and feel best prepared to lead. Then write the reason for your first choice. 1) ACTORS: This group performs a brief play each morning. Last year,smash-hit performances included The Three Little Pigs and the Three Bears. Allshows are in English, of course. The group also comes up with rudimentarycostumes and props. Plays (mini-plays!) are performed on the Humanities Spring lawn. 2) COOKS: This group cooks a snack for the rest of the group each morning -- involves reading the recipe in English, including instructions (beat eggs lightly, etc.) We have recipes from last year's cookies and "treats." If you want to do a favorite recipe of your own, that's fine but recipe must be approved by HS staff (English must be clear and simple) and cook must be given your ingredients list at least 3 days ahead of time so that we're sure we have everything you need. 3) SCULPTORS: This group creates mobiles and sculptures with found objects (from the fields around HS) some summers; other years this is an art activity with collages, Japanese Ikebana, calligraphy  and more. We are open to teachers' suggestion for this activity (teacher's suggestions are actually welcome for all our HS Kids activities!) and therefore varies a great deal from year to year.
Please list all types of previous experiences and work-experiences that you think could be relevant to being an activity leader at HS Kids (i.e. camp counselor, baby-sitter, tutor (in the English language or other subjects), acting or cooking experience (particularly cookies and cakes) background in art. etc.) and give a brief description of each one.
Please describe in detail an experience or work experience with children thatyou especially loved and/or think was particularly rewarding or constructive.
