2022 WCFH Call for Participation: Emerging Composer Workshop
The Women Composers Festival of Hartford embraces diversity of race, ethnicity, and ability.  The mission of the Festival is to feature artists who identify as women, including transgender and gender-fluid individuals.  The Festival is open to presentations from composers/performers/speakers who are willing to confront gender and other intersecting identities in their work.

The Women Composers Festival of Hartford and The Hartt School are proud to sponsor an emerging composer workshop with the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra (https://www.hicomusic.org/). Selected participants will compose a new, short piece for wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon) that will be read and workshopped on in the late afternoon/evening on Friday, March 11th, 2022 at The Hartt School in West Hartford, CT. The reading session will be recorded for participants’ personal (i.e. non-commercial) use.

Participants will attend virtual sessions with workshop director Dr. Jessica Rudman on two dates (to be determined). Additionally, Dr. Rudman will mentor the students via email and online discussion as they work on their pieces. Drafts of scores and parts will be due Saturday, January 15th, 2022, and finished compositions will be due Saturday, February 19th, 2022.

The Emerging Composer Workshop's reading session with HICO will be on Friday, March 11th, as part of the WCFH 2022 Festival, March 11 - 13 at the University of Hartford's The Hartt School.  Participants will receive a free Festival pass, which will grant them admission to all Women Composers Festival events. The WCFH is not able to provide travel assistance to participants.  Applications are due on October 1, 2021 at 11:59pm ET.

**We acknowledge that, given the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot predict whether our 2022 Festival will be in-person, fully virtual, or a hybrid combination.  

Eligibility:
* “Emerging Composer” is defined as anyone who has not yet completed a terminal degree in music composition.
* Open to composers of any age who identify as women, including transgender and gender-fluid individuals
* Priority may be given to applicants from CT.
* Previous participants are welcome to apply, but priority may be given to those who have not yet been selected for the workshop.
* Applicants must be able to attend the virtual sessions, as well as the workshop on March 11th, 2022.

Submission Guidelines:
* Submit the online application form including short essay explaining why the composer is interested in participating and contact information for one teacher (current or past) who will serve as a reference for the student
* 1-2 sample scores and, if available, recordings of previous pieces if available (MIDI recordings are acceptable)
* All applications must be received by October 1st, 2021 at 11:59pm ET.

Timeline and Results:
* 11:59 pm on October 1st, 2021: submissions received via our online application form
* Sunday, October 10th, 2021: selected students will be notified and asked to confirm their participation
* Sunday, November 14th, 2021, 1 - 4pm: first virtual session with Dr. Rudman
* Sunday, January 16th, 2022: drafts of scores and parts due by email
* Sunday, January 23rd, 2022, 1 - 4pm: second virtual session with Dr. Rudman
* Sunday, February 13th, 2022: final scores and parts due by email
* Friday, March 11th, 2022, Time TBD: Student Workshop at The Hartt School
