Purpose:
The purpose of this research is to pilot test toys, colors and people to make sure we can use them in a future study.  We expect that some toys or colors will be associated with one gender and we need to make sure that children agree.  We also have short videos of people who will be in the future study and we need to choose the two people who are judged most similarly by children.

Procedures:
If you choose to participate in this research project, you will be asked to fill out a survey online.  We ask that the parent stay with the child to read the questions but try not to influence the child’s answers in any way.  The child will be asked to judge whether toys and colors are more for boys or girls or both. They will also watch seven very short clips (about 20 second each) and rate the actor.

Duration:
Given the above procedures, it is estimated that participation in this research will be about 10 minutes.

Location:
The research will take place at the participant’s convenience via a computer with an Internet connection and a web browser.  Please note that completing the survey in a public location may allow others to see your responses.

Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria:
Participants for this study are being recruited from children ages 7-12.

Risks & Benefits:
The potential risks and discomforts involved in this study are believed to be negligible. The potential benefits associated with this project may include providing information that will allow us to further study children’s understanding of gender.

As with any study, you should be aware that unforeseen problems may occur, however, the likelihood of any serious problem is believed to be low.  Your participation is voluntary, and you may refuse to participate or stop your participation at any time for any reason without penalty. You may choose to skip a question or terminate participation at any time.

Use of Research Results:

Data may be used in future research, publications, presentations and/or for teaching purposes.

Confidentiality

Your child’s survey responses will be stored in a database, without any identifying information.  Your child’s participation choice and responses are completely confidential.
