At the Annual Electors Meeting on 8 March 2023, BRRAG moved a motion regarding increasing the numbers of verge trees in Belmont. The motion was supported by those in attendance.
According to the Belmont Bulletin 2000 trees were planted on verges and parks in the last year. Follow up figures provided by the City of Belmont, indicate that only 280 of those were planted on verges. Currently there is no requirement that all verges have trees and residents can choose not to have them.
The supported motion at the Annual Electors Meeting was as follows:
That council resolves to:
a) Amend the Urban Forrest Policy to include a mandate on street trees on all vacant street verges where the City thinks they are both necessary and appropriate.
b) Increase verge tree planting to 3000 trees per year for the next five years after which a review of street tree numbers is undertaken to plan for the future.
We the undersigned agree with the motion above that was moved and supported at the Annual Electors Meeting.
