Baptism is the first sacrament celebrated in the process of becoming a full member of the Catholic Church. This class is for all parents and godparents desirous to baptize a child under seven years old. At least one parent must be Catholic.
Requirements for Godparents (same as Confirmation sponsors):
• They have received all three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion
• They are practicing Catholics, attending Mass on Sundays, Holy Days of Obligation, and receiving Communion and making Confession at least once a year
• They live their Christian vocation as a single person or as a person validly married in the Church?*
• They live out their baptismal commitment to Christ and His Church by their response to all people
• They believe all that the Catholic Church teaches and believes
• They aren't a parent of the child to be baptized
• They are at least sixteen years old
• They promise to give their support to the person they sponsor by prayers and Christian examples in daily life
*Those married by the Justice of the Peace, those living together without the benefit of marriage and those who have been divorced and remarried without a Declaration of Nullity from the Diocesan Tribunal from a previous marriage(s) are not eligible to fulfill the role of sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation in the Catholic Church.
Remember, to schedule your child’s baptism, you’ll need:
- To attend this class.
- To fill out the registration form. If you are not a registered parishioner and would like the baptism celebrated here, we need a letter of consent from your pastor stating that you’re allowed to baptize here.
- Have the Godparent(s) sign this Oath. Godparents who live far away may attend the Baptism class at their parish and share a completion certificate with you - send that certificate to sacraments@stpius.org.
- Once these steps are complete, then email Ryan Pollock (rpollock@stpius.org) to ask about available dates.
God bless you, and we look forward to meeting you soon!
