Course Description:
Negative societal narratives of disability can have a significant impact on the emotional health of disabled people. Narrative practitioners are encouraged to assist other marginalized individuals (people of color, women and LGBTQ+ clients) to actively resist the way they have been represented in the broader culture. However, this reclamation of pride and identity has not always been forefront in therapeutic sessions with disabled clients and their families.

In this workshop, Norman Kunc and Emma Van der Klift will contend that understanding, acknowledging and contesting the pervasive narratives that often posit disability as a tragic occurrence and even the source of chronic sorrow will allow counsellors to assist disabled clients and their families to effectively resist their effects.
