Robotics Application 24-25                                    Due by February 26, 2024
We are currently accepting applications for the Williams Middle School for the 2024-2025 Robotics Class. Williams’ robotics program is part of VEX, an international organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, technology, engineering and math through innovative team projects and robotics competitions (including programming). The primary focus of the class is VEX robots, but we will also be learning about careers in the STEM field, gear ratios, mechanisms, coding/programming, AI, ROV robots, Mars rovers, Raspberry Pi computers, and more!

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Caruthers (bobby.caruthers@rockwallisd.org).

If yes, please explain and go into detail. *
READ BEFORE YOU APPLY: What is VEX? In VEX Competitions, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams from around the world in a game-based engineering challenge. STEM concepts are put to the test on the playing field as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels: local champions go on to compete against the best in the world at VEX Worlds each April! Teamwork Challenge: Two teams working together to maximize their score. Robot Skills Challenge: One robot and driver playing alone against the clock. Programming Skills Challenge: One robot using sensors to run autonomously. This year we will host competition teams in class, each made up of no more than 8 students in 7th and 8th grades. The competition season begins mid-November and continues through March, if a team advances to the regional championship. *
Required
If you are accepted, you will be placed in the class. Once class begins in August, you will need to provide: VEX Consent Form, $20 fee for competition shirt, and a $25 class fee. We will have fundraisers throughout the year to help with the costs of competitions. *
Required
Robotics is a time-intensive, team-centered activity stretched out over a long competition season, and it often ramps up in the weeks before competition as extra practices are needed to get projects, presentations and robots ready to compete. Please use discretion when applying for a spot in the program. While we honor students' commitments to other activities, we expect them to take seriously their commitment to robotics as well. If a student misses multiple meetings without notification and/or coach consent, he/she may be removed from the competition team. Students may also be removed from the competition team for not honoring the commitment of the signed contract. If a student is removed from the competition team, they will be provided alternate assignments in class. *
Required
Students: Please answer the following four questions honestly. You need to answer them in 3-4 sentences, but you can add more if needed.
Why do you want to be a part of the WMS robotics program? (Please answer in 3-4 sentences. You can add more if needed.) *
What do you think might be the most enjoyable part of being a member of the robotics team?  (Please answer in 3-4 sentences. You can add more if needed.) *
What is unique/special about you that you will bring to the robotics team? (Please answer in 3-4 sentences. You can add more if needed.) *
What does it mean to you to be a member of a team? (Please answer in 3-4 sentences. You can add more if needed.) *
List a teacher that would recommend you for this position. *

If chosen for the robotics class, which elective do you want to drop? *
In order to ensure that parents and students understand the responsibility and commitment needed by each robotics team member, please take the time to read over and sign this contract with your parent/guardian.
Student: I realize that no VEX problem has only one solution and that a successful team is one that cooperates by considering everyone's input. Because criticizing is not productive, I will listen with an open mind to all solutions and ideas. *
Required
Student:  I agree that my behavior in class and tournaments will be helpful and encouraging. *
Required
Student:  I agree to cooperate on whatever solution the team chooses, even if it is not my first choice. *
Required
Student: I agree that all solutions, including robot attachments, programs, props, costumes, signs, etc., will be made completely by me or a by member of my team, not by my coaches or parents. *
Required
Student:  I understand that the VEX program considers all teams that bring a solution to the tournaments to be winners. I agree to show other teams the utmost respect and good sportsmanship. *
Required
Student:  I agree that the goal of my team should be to do our best to solve a challenging problem. *
Required
Student: I have read this information and agree to the expectations of a robotics team member if accepted. *
Required
Parent/guardian: I agree, in the proper spirit of VEX, not to interfere with the team’s solutions. All creations, inventions, ideas, must come from the team members. *
Required
Parent/guardian: I agree to make every effort to have my child attend every team meeting (if needed for before/after school). If there is a conflict, either my child or I will notify the coach as soon as possible. I understand that my child has a commitment to the robotics program. *
Required
Parent/guardian:  I realize that my child’s coach will be contributing a significant amount of time and effort to provide a rewarding experience for the team. I will try to be cooperative and helpful as possible, and I will talk to the coach about any problems or concerns that may arise. *
Required
Parent/guardian: I have read this information and agree to the expectations of a robotics team member if my child is accepted. *
