Keynote Speaker: Dr. David Myers

Title: Misinformation and Education in a Post-Truth Age

Abstract:

In this 45-minute presentation, David Myers will introduce the challenge that misinformation presents to our civil democracy. He will offer 10 examples of how people at both ends of the political spectrum express belief in things that are clearly untrue. He will identify psychological mechanisms that enable false beliefs. And he will suggest the contribution that science inquiry and education can make to restraining misinformation.

Brief Bio:

David is a Hope College social psychologist whose National Science Foundation-supported research and writings have appeared in dozens of periodicals. He is also the author of 18 books including a just-published collection of short essays, How Do We Know Ourselves: Curiosities and Marvels of the Human Mind (Farrar, Straus and Giroux).
