Safety is an important aspect of our operations at Itasca. To avoid any minor or serious accidents when using a motorboat owned by the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories (IBSL), the following policies must be followed.

IBSL motorboats (pontoon and other boats with permanently or temporarily mounted outboard motors) are for research and class instruction, and cannot be used for recreation (fishing, swimming, sightseeing etc.). *

All motorboats must be operated by someone who is 21 years or older, and preferably be the leading investigator or faculty member associated with the group.

Experience and demonstrated ability backing up trailers and launching boats is required to be able to use IBSL trailer boats.

The operator will be aware of and follow basic rules and laws concerning the operating and navigating watercraft according to the laws of the State of Minnesota. Check each box to indicate agreement with the regulation:

Life jackets must be worn by everyone on board. It is the operator's responsibility to ensure everyone is wearing a life jacket before leaving the dock. Extra life jackets are in building 46 (boat house by the docks).

Passengers will remain seated when boat is at traveling speed.

The speed limit on park lakes is 10 mph. Go slow.

Be respectful of other watercraft. When possible, stay to the right of approaching boats when passing. Keep a respectful distance from canoes, kayaks, and fishing boats that can be very common on Lake Itasca.

Do not drive boats into wild rice beds, and limit driving at traveling speed (10 mph) close to/along wild rice beds. Wild rice is a lightly rooted plant that grows in soft lake sediments, and boat travel through, as well as the associated wake from boat traffic can be very damaging to wild rice plants.

Motorboats are to be used only during daylight hours. Station boats are not fitted with nighttime running lights unless prior arrangements have been made. Provide at least a 15-minute grace period, especially before sunset, to ensure you are not on the lake after dark. Fines may result at the expense of the operator from boating after dark without the proper lighting.

If a motorboat is being used for instructor or for research, passengers may swim, but only if the boat is outfitted with a ladder.

The operator must be familiar and comfortable with the boat before fully embarking on a sampling or class outing.

For the IBSL pontoon, the operator must demonstrate their ability to safely return the pontoon to the boatlift. This can be difficult, especially during windy conditions, and the pontoon cannot be used unless the operator is comfortable with their ability to return the pontoon on the boatlift.

Safety must guide decision making and if the operator becomes uncomfortable with the boat, or weather conditions, they must turn back immediately. Absolutely no boat travel is permitted during poor weather.
