The School and the Founder

With the mission of “Educating young people, Evangelizing the Gospel”, Dr. Wong Tak Hing founded Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School in 1960. The school was the first school that provided both Anglo-Chinese and Chinese Sections in Tai Po, and among the first few secondary schools established in the New Territories. Young people in the New Territories have been blessed by the establishment of the school, especially in the Sixties when there was a disproportionate allocation of education resources between urban and rural areas.  The School has undergone 5 phases of development since its establishment. Dr. Wong donated $250,000 for the Phase I development which was half of the cost of the project, and a further $100,000 for the Phase II and III development which was equivalent to one-sixth of the overall expenses.

Dr. Wong Tak Hing was among the first batch of Chinese women to receive formal western medical training and was among the elite of her time. Her background could have allowed her to earn prestige and affluence. However, she chose for herself a simple and humble life instead. The donations made by Dr. Wong went beyond just a small portion of her possessions. She was wealthy, but became wealthier through giving. She was prestigious, yet gained greater prestige by humbling herself.

Dr. Wong committed to providing quality education to young people despite their socioeconomic status. The school follows the founder’s direction in realising her vision.

Dr. Wong Tak Hing, our founder, contributed a significant portion of her possessions and blessed the teenagers in the New Territories with the opportunities of higher education in the Sixties – a time when this need was neglected by the wider community. To uphold Dr. Wong’s vision of providing quality education in the public sector, we appeal for your generous support in setting up the “Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School Development Foundation”.
