Understanding Your Values on ḵu/ḵuu sea otters
After almost 200 years of absence due to overhunting, ḵu/ḵuu sea otters are starting to return to Haida Gwaii – migrating from populations on the central coast of BC, the north end of Vancouver Island and/or SE Alaska. Their return and population growth over the next few decades will change local ecosystems as they expand to places they once lived and re-establish a deep cultural connection with Haidas. Their return brings opportunity to consider what we want our modern-day relationship with sea otters to look like based on past connections, values today, and hopes for the future.

To help the Council of the Haida Nation and Gwaii Haanas Archipelago Management Board plan for the return of ḵu/ḵuu to Haida Gwaii, we want to know what you care about and how you think we can address it. Through a project co-led by the Haida Nation and Gwaii Haanas called X̱aayda Gwaay.yaay Ḵuugaay Gwii Sdiihltl’lx̱a – The Sea Otters Return to Haida Gwaii, there will be many opportunities for you to tell us what you think, including your answers to the questions in this survey. Haawa/Haw’aa Thank you for taking the time to let us know what is important to you!
