All 4th, 5th, and 6th graders are eligible to enroll in and participate with the Flushing Community Schools Elementary Strings program for the 2021-2022 school year. The current plan is to hold Elementary Strings lessons at the high school BEFORE school two days per week at 8 am.  At the end of our class students will return to their elementary buildings by bus for the normal school day. This model worked well with the elementary band students this year and I am excited to adopt this with our strings program!

There is no additional cost for string instruction.  Instrument rental fees range from around $20 per month to more than $50 per month, depending on the instrument and rental provider.  Students will also need to purchase the appropriate method book for their instrument and class (these can be ordered at the beginning of the class and cost around $10).  School instruments and loaner books are available for students and families who are unable to rent an instrument, dependent on the instrument preference and sizing requirements of your student (I have many more school violin and violas available than cellos and basses in elementary sizes).  

Elementary strings is broken into two groups: BEGINNER strings for students who have no previous strings experience or limited previous string instruction, and ADVANCED strings for students who have already had at least one year of string instruction. Strings lessons will begin on Monday, September 13 with the following schedule:

Monday: BEGINNER violin & viola sectional
Tuesday: ADVANCED Elementary orchestra
Wednesday: BEGINNER Elementary orchestra (violin & viola AND cello & bass groups)
Thursday: ADVANCED Elementary orchestra
Friday: BEGINNER cello & bass sectional

Every effort will be made to accommodate scheduling for students who are interested in and eligible to participate in elementary band, elementary choir, and/or art club.
