Presentation about new on-line Cree dictionary (
https://itwewina.dev/).
While the primary topic would be the on-line Cree dictionary, this presentation will also include some observations about using that resource as part on on-line language instruction.
Session Description: Arppe will be presenting on recent developments in creating on-line resources for Cree which make use of language technology to best deal with the complex word structure of the language.
These resources include a new version of an on-line Cree dictionary as well as on on-line collection of Cree texts. The final form of these applications will evolve based on feedback from language instructors, learners and other users in the linguistic community, such as in Maskwacîs.
Instructor: Antti Arppe is Assistant Professor of Linguistics in the University of Alberta. He has been working on the development of language technological tools and applications for sustaining and revitalizing Indigenous languages together with respective communities in Canada, e.g. for Cree together with Maskwacîs Education and Schools Commission.
Before his academic career, he worked for Lingsoft, a small language technology company in Finland, managing the development of spell-checkers, grammar-checkers and electronic dictionaries for the majority languages in the Nordic countries in Europe.
