Carol Ann -Carol Ann loves the blurred lines between fantasy and reality. She wants her books to transport her to a world with a bit more magic than the mundane. Neil Gaiman, Erin Morgenstern, and Sarah Waters are her favorite modern authors, though she’ll happily let you know she’s read all of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series too! She’s not a genre snob, but will be focused on magic realism and some horror picks. Her recent reads include Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - V.E. Schwab, Magic Lessons - Alice Hoffman, The City We Became - N.K. Jemisin, Nothing But Blackened Teeth - Cassandra Khaw, A Psalm for the Wild-Built - Becky Chambers, and The Witch’s Heart - Genevieve Gornichec

Christen -Christen is an avid reader of YA who challenges herself to find authors who bring a unique dynamic to the genre. She loves books that have an element of the unexpected—a book written completely in verse (The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo) or an entire story in which the setting is an elevator ride to the bottom floor (Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds). She's fascinated with novels that play with format like Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff's Illuminae Files series, but she's also a fan of beautiful prose that has you wanting to memorize every other line (The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner). She gravitates toward novels with gripping first lines ( “The docks were no place for a lady.” — The Last Legacy from Adrienne Young) and loves a good re-imagining (Brigid Kemmerer’s A Curse so Dark and Lonely is her favorite Beauty and the Beast reimagining yet!) Christen will be focusing on the Young Adult Fiction picks. While she’s not committing to a particular sub-genre, she promises it'll be an entertaining read. Her recent YA reads include Small Favors by Erin A. Craig, Fable by Adrienne Young, Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen, and Morgan Matson's Since You've Been Gone.

Blake -Blake is a reader who believes that narrative, myth, and fiction have a way of being truer than true. A well written book has a way of making us more aware of what it means to be human. That’s why Blake loves novels. He is especially in love classics (Steinbeck is his favorite), grit lit (Peter Heller is a boss), neo-romanticism (stuff connected to our interactions with nature), and pastoral literature (Frederick Buechner makes him cry). You’ll likely find him reading something with a deeply flawed and gritty protagonist, and…. often times the antagonist exists in a system or inside of the protagonist himself.

Phil -Phil believes a good book is something we can inhabit. For a few days or weeks, however long it takes to finish, we enter the world of the story. Phil tries to read very broadly, moving from genre fiction to travel to science to literary fiction and hitting many points in between, so that he may experience a multitude of lives and perspectives. Some of his favorite books are High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, Churchill and Orwell by Thomas Ricks, The Cold Six Thousand by James Elroy and For the Time Being by Annie Dillard.

Sara -Sara reads with the seasons, so you will likely get a variety of genres if you read with her. In the spring, she goes for lighter reads with humor and light romance, summer is for short stories or novels that connect us to one another, the fall is for suspense, and winter is for all of the award winners that are must reads (and maybe a good western!) Sara is a sucker for multigenerational fiction, or reimaginings of ancient archetypes, she loves a fun dysfunctional family story! She also likes to read debut writers - especially women and BIPOC writers, because she's always looking for a fresh new way to tell a story. You won't get a formulaic story with Sara's books, but you might get a memoir or short story collection every now and again. Some of Sara’s (recent) favorites include Circe by Madeline Miller, Monogamy by Sue Miller, Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, and Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy, and These Precious Days (essays) by Ann Patchett
